Tropical Storm Fay comes to NJ

Strong winds and flash floods are expected, according to the National Weather Service

MOUNT HOLLY — Tropical Storm Fay is expected to hit New Jersey Friday, bringing heavy rains and powerful winds, according to the National Weather Service here.

Fay is the first storm to strike the Garden State in what has thus far been an active Atlantic storm season, which has seen six named storms so far this year.

Fay is expected to bring to heavy rains and powerful wind gusts throughout all of New Jersey and Delaware along with the southeastern portion of Pennsylvania, according to the National Weather Service.

Per the weather agency’s 6 a.m. update Friday, Fay’s impact is projected to be worse than initially expected, with the addition of warnings being applied to Delaware coastal waters and flooding anticipated further west.

“Minor tree and power line damage is possible on New Jersey’s coast throughout the day,” the weather service briefing says.

The coastal winds also bring a “slight” chance of tornadic activity along the Jersey shore between Atlantic City and Middletown.

Inland, the Delaware valley can anticipate wind gusts up to 50 mph, according to the weather service.

Rainfall and flash flooding are the most imminent threat, according to the National Weather Service, 2-4 inches rain anticipated Friday.

The next named storm of 2020 will be Gonzalo. The next update on Fay will be 1 p.m. Friday, according to the weather service briefing.
