Wendy’s New Breakfast

Fast Food Chain is the Latest to Enter Growing Business Area

MT. LAUREL — Fast-food restaurant Wendy’s is serving up eggs and attitude as it kicks off its new breakfast line.

The restaurant started offering breakfast items Monday, while simultaneously launching a social media war with fast-food rival McDonalds.

“Here lies Mediocrity,” a tweet from Wendy’s read Friday, with a picture of tombstone with the words Egg McMuffin etched upon it.

In an unofficial response, McDonald’s declared Monday — the day Wendy’s launched breakfast — as national Egg McMuffin day. The longtime maker McGriddles and pancakes are offered customers a free Egg McMuffin for picking them as their morning meal destination.

According to the McDonalds Twitter page, the company is dishing out the free sandwiches in response to 2020 being a leap year.

“Good News!! A leap day means an extra day to get breakfast,” McDonald’s posted on social media Saturday, to advertise its March 2 deal.

To honor the new holiday, the company also changed its Twitter name to “National #EggMcMuffinDay is 3/2. Where?”

Regardless, Wendy’s has kicked off its fourth attempt at breakfast with confidence, already calling morning offerings “America’s favorite breakfast,” according to the bags the meals are distributed in.

The new morning menu ranges from such breakfast staples as egg sandwiches on croissants, to exclusive offerings such as the maple bacon chicken croissant.

The company also offers what it calls classic combos, which include bacon or sausage, egg cheese sandwiches on a biscuit. It includes a uniquely Wendy’s take on what is considered a classic breakfast as well: a breakfast Baconator, which features the usual Baconator construction with the addition of a fried egg and the substitution of swiss cheese sauce, according to the company’s website.

If unique beverages are your taste, Wendy’s is offering to sell its patrons its latest twist on coffee — The Frosty-ccino, which is a cold brew coffee blended with Frosty mix poured over ice, the company’s website says. It comes in both vanilla and chocolate flavors.

Wendy’s answer to all its hash brown offering competitors is a variety of sides such as seasoned potatoes and oatmeal bars. The company also offers apple slices for the more health-conscious breakfast connoisseur.

Wendy’s first announced it was going to keep for the most important meal in the day back in September, according to a report in The Wall Street Journal.

The fast-food breakfast market is becoming a more important segment of the quick-service restaurant industry’s profits. Morning visits for coffee and sandwiches are worth around $234 billion, the Journal reported.

Breakfast offerings are only available in the morning, the company says.

Wendy’s joins other fast-food competitors in the area such as Taco Bell, Chick-fil-a, Burger King and Starbucks.

For hungry South Jersey residents, it appears as though all Wendy’s locations in Burlington, Camden, and Gloucester counties are among the franchises participating in the new culinary experiment.
