Toymaker Degenders Classic Toy Featured in Animated Movie

Hasbro, maker of popular toys and board games for properties such as “Star Wars” and “My Little Pony,” announced Thursday that it would be changing the branding of the classic toy Mr. Potato Head.

“Hasbro is making sure all feel welcome in the Potato Head world by officially renaming the MR. POTATO HEAD brand to POTATO HEAD to better reflect the full line,” the company said in a news release. But rest assured, the iconic MR. and MRS. POTATO HEAD characters aren’t going anywhere and will remain MR. and MRS. POTATO HEAD.”

The newly branded toy will be available this fall, Hasbro said.

The company says that it will be launching a “create your own potato family” celebration alongside the rollout.

Hasbro states that the event “is a celebration of the many faces of families allowing kids to imagine and create their own Potato Head family…”

They state that with “2 large potato bodies, 1 small potato body, and 42 accessories. The possibilities to create your own families are endless with mixing and mashing all the parts and pieces.”

The “Create Your Own Potato Family” kit would be a great addition to old, gendered potato figures, the company says.

The company says “potato head,” announced Thursday, “has provided endless creative possibilities to our preschoolers for almost 70 years and will continue to do so with the new CREATE YOUR POTATO HEAD FAMILY.”

The “Mr. Potato Head” brand has existed for the last 70 years and is recommended for ages two and up.
